Goals for the year:
To move students towards increasing independence in the use of communication skills and strategies. For students to become independent readers and writers and continue to expand their literacy proficiency. In order to prepare them to have productive and enriched life long experiences and academic success using the English language. To develop a love of learning. To develop respect and understanding of each others' opinions and differences. To develop a secure,creative and safe learning environment.
Abilities that will be developed:
Write stories or passages that contain a beginning, middle and end. Focus on a specific topic or idea and include appropriate word choices and details about setting and character.
Use proper spelling, punctuation and sentence structure when writing
Use the writing process (plan, rough draft, revise edit and final copy) when completing a writing assignment.
Use correct grammar (subject verb and noun, pronoun agreement) when using writing and speaking
Use three different styles of writing – expressive, persuasive and informative
Be able to select and read magazines, books, etc. that are age appropriate.
Use clues from a sentence or paragraph to determine the meaning of unknown words (context clues)
Use own words to retell stories include the major events,plot, setting and explanation of the characters’ actions, feelings and motivations.
Use various research tools such as a dictionary, encyclopedia, thesaurus and the World Wide Web to gather and present information.
